There are very few things you can’t go wrong with in life, and a soundtrack featuring compositions from Hans Zimmer is one of those things. As the film soars forward, smashing box office records worldwide, we need to take a moment to focus on the Top Gun: Maverick original soundtrack that also features Lorne Balfe, Harold Faltermeyer, Lady Gaga, OneRepublic, Kenny Loggins, and Miles Teller.
Comprised of 12 songs featuring both instrumentals and mega bops, the Top Gun: Maverick original soundtrack is a short gem that lasts 41 minutes and 53 seconds. Still, maybe that’s where the beauty lies and why you’ll likely keep it on replay whether you’ve seen the film or not. The soundtrack’s thrilling beats are one thing, but there’s also something achingly nostalgic about the tracks that slow down. In every way, it feels like the kind of album that deserves to be blared on theme park speakers, even if we’re not in a world of high-speed fly zones.
It’s going to be very easy to fixate on tracks like “Main Titles (You’ve Been Called Back to Top Gun),” “You’re Where You Belong / Give ‘Em Hell,” “The Man, The Legend / Touchdown,” “Penny Returns – Interlude,” and the closing, “Top Gun Anthem.” Further, and indeed, every track on the album is a masterful composition that’ll take you to places with people to meet and stories to be told.
There are also songs like OneRepublic’s “I Ain’t Worried,” which is very much the summer’s anthem, and Lady Gaga’s heartrending “Hold My Hand,” that I personally can’t get enough of. As mentioned above, you can’t go wrong with Hans Zimmer, but bring in more talented musicians into the mix, and the entire soundtrack becomes something indescribable and moving.
Sometimes, an action-packed adventure film’s soundtrack is hard to leave on replay despite how great it is, but Top Gun: Maverick stands on the opposite end of the road. It’s the kind of soundtrack that demands to be on replay. It requires more than one listen and draws you in from the start, keeping you strapped in a world you want to stay a bit longer in.
