As one of my favorite Disney films, I was excited for the Beauty and the Beast live-action to see the new takes on the timeless fairy tale and classic Disney film. While not perfect (what is?), I thoroughly enjoy the film and the original motion picture soundtrack. Alan Menken returns to supply the score and music with Howard Ashman and Tim Rice lyrics. Most of the songs in the Beauty and the Beast original motion picture soundtrack are the same as the animated feature, with the new cast performing them.
Emma Watson sings the opening “Belle,” and I felt like a kid again watching it for the first time. “Gaston,” one of the best Disney villain songs, is performed by Josh Gad and Luke Evans. They do a fantastic job of capturing the energy of the original while leaving their mark.
Ewan McGregor sings “Be Our Guest,” and I was especially happy to have him in another musical. Even with his comical French accent, his lovely voice is a joy to hear. Emma Thomson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Ian McKellen are also featured in this number, which is always fun to listen to.
As for the original songs, one instantly became a favorite – “Evermore” – a ballad sung by the Beast (Dan Stevens). It is full of yearning and adoration that perfectly illustrates how Belle inspired him to love and become a better person. All the best love stories have that element of inspiration and longing, which is palpable in this song as the Beast sings while watching Belle ride away. I love how he puts to words the feeling that she will never truly leave him because of the positive impact she has had on his life.
