HBO’s Scenes from a Marriage starring Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac is coming for our emotions, and there is no way out. Sign us up. We’re here for it. And as soon as we figure out where to send our therapy bills, we’ll keep all of you covered.
Originally, a 1973 Swedish television miniseries written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, Scenes from a Marriage deals with the aftermaths of a love’s curtain call. According to Deadline: The five-part Scenes from a Marriage addresses the complexity of Jonathan (Isaac) and Mira (Chastain) as individuals who ultimately know their marriage isn’t being ripped apart by any one event or flaw. Viewers will eavesdrop on private conversations between two people torn between feelings of hate and love.
If we are to judge by the trailer alone, the limited series is going to require plenty of snacks, drinks, and entire boxes of tissues. Plus, if you’ve watched A Most Violent Year, which also stars Chastain and Isaac then you know the two are explosive on screen. Whatever their relation, whatever they are doing, both actors are phenomenal together, which means Scenes from a Marriage will be packed with a wide array of moments that will destroy us.
Oscar Isaac at one point sings to his child and at no point did anyone prepare us for that, so we’re here to prepare you. It’s packed with way more emotion than we signed up for, but it’s so promising in its mix.
Since the emotions will be running high in this series, I imagine there will be plenty of stunning scenes to breakdown and excavate. The performances alone will be a testament to plenty, but the content will surely deliver as well.
Scenes from a Marriage premieres September 12th on HBO. Watch the trailer below and come cry with us about it.
