Tatiana Maslany | Orphan Black
Orphan Black is back along with Tatiana Maslany’s immaculately brilliant performances. There honestly aren’t enough to words to describe them, but in a premiere this strong, she nailed every character’s scenes gloriously. It isn’t often that an actress plays four different roles on the same show, but she then plays one of the characters pretending to be the other character – sounds complicated right? It’s one of those things only those who watch can understand. And fundamentally, it’s still shocking that there are people who don’t watch the show because they’re missing out on something truly epic.
That being said, while every performance was exceptional this week, Maslany was especially brilliant as Sarah because she made the audience feel her simultaneous frustration and determination. Through her portrayal the evident drive to get things done alongside the heartbreak of not being with Kira was incredibly noteworthy. Sarah’s audacious, and as an audience we were able to see that drive stronger than ever. And the slight awkwardness present when she was pretending to be Cosima was genius because while Maslany’s crafted the art of portraying more than one person, Sarah’s not exactly as perfect. However, above all things she made the scene believable for the surroundings – it’s as an audience we could tell something was off, but that’s what’s most excellent, the awkwardness felt natural.
This week’s premiere was strong, and the performances were even stronger, if there’s one thing we could tell it’s that the rest of the season is surely going to blow us away.
